Therapeutic Activities Seniors Should Try

When you’re older, it’s easier to fall into habits such as sitting in front of the television for hours on end. This is the default activity for many seniors, but it doesn’t have to continue that way.

There are tons of senior-friendly activities that older adults can do to maintain overall strength and flexibility.

Today, we at Lowenhill Home Care Services are sharing this list of therapeutic activities seniors should try. These activities are cost-effective and safe for everyone. However, we do recommend you ask your doctor for permission before starting any of them.

  1. Animal Therapy
Many seniors may have trouble connecting with others. Animal therapy is a great way to help make bonding time with others easier for older adults.

Animal therapy also offers other benefits, such as:

    • Fighting depression
    • Decreasing feelings of loneliness
    • Improving motor skills
    • Lowering blood pressure
  2. Physical Activity
Many seniors avoid exercise for fear of getting into accidents. However, exercise is the best way to strengthen bones and muscles, which can lead to lesser falls and trips

    Some senior-friendly options include:

    • Swimming
    • Yoga
    • Golfing or fishing
    • Strength training
    • Taking community classes such as dancing or aerobics
  3. Music Therapy
Several studies show that music can have a variety of positive effects on the senior mind. For patients with dementia, listening to familiar songs may help bring back feelings or memories. It can also relax anxious nerves and help boost a senior’s mood.

Arthritis: Prevention and Treatments for Seniors

According to a 2013-2015 survey conducted by the CDC, 49.6% of people ages 65 years or older were reported to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis.

Arthritis can affect any part of a senior’s body; however, symptoms are most felt in the hands, knees, hips, and lower back. Often, this can make activities, such as exercise and chores, impossible for seniors to complete. This may lead to other physical, mental, and medical conditions such as weight gain, depression and anxiety, and even heart disease.

Early Signs of Arthritis in Seniors

If you or your loved one are experiencing joint pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness, it could be a sign that you have arthritis. While there is currently no way to cure arthritis, there are several steps you can take to minimize your chances of developing the condition:

  1. Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet, focusing on anti-inflammatory foods such as oily fish, nuts, olive oils, and berries.
  2. Do low-impact exercises that help improve strength and flexibility, such as swimming, yoga, tai-chi, or walking.
  3. Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce joint pressure.

Living with Joint Pain

While arthritis can be independently managed by seniors through careful practices, it’s a serious disease and can affect every part of their well-being.

Lowenhill Home Care Services can provide your loved ones with the appropriate support and care to help them live a healthy and safe life despite arthritis. With the help of our skilled caregivers, your loved ones can continue living independently in the comforts of their own home.
