Exercise for Optimum Brain Health

Group of seniors doing stretching exercise

Assumptions of exercise being able to stagger the development of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia has been around for quite some time. Some studies suggest that keeping a regular exercise routine might not only reduce memory loss but might also aid in keeping memory intact.

In a study conducted by the University of British Colombia, researchers found that routinely engaging in aerobic exercise seemed to boost the size of the hippocampus.

The hippocampus is the region of the brain that is associated with memory and learning. It is also involved in the storing of long-term memories and making those memories resistant to forgetting. This part of the brain also plays an important role in spatial processing and navigation.

As we get older, the hippocampus typically decreases in size, affecting its overall functionality.

By engaging in aerobic activities and other forms of exercise, we may be able to keep this decrease from happening.

Here are some senior-friendly exercises to try out:

  • Swimming
  • Cycling
  • Low-impact aerobics
  • Dancing
  • Elliptical machine

Regular exercise also helps with improving mood, promoting better sleep, and reducing stress. Each of these is being linked to better overall health and wellness.

Who’s Taking Care of You When I’m Gone?

The older we get, the less likely we are to be able to keep up with normal activities we used to do – this is often the case with everyone. And one of the worries old couples face is the thought of leaving behind their loved ones without anyone to take care of them, especially if they both have complex conditions that put their health at risk.

Who will help them go to the doctor? Who will remind them to take their medication? Who will help them eat? Walk down the steps or cook their meals for them?

All these questions might be what’s keeping you up in the evening. Luckily, we might just have the solution!
