Strategies to Cope With Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is when a person leaks urine by accident. Although it can happen to anyone, it’s more common in seniors. However, bladder control issues can be embarrassing for some seniors and cause them to avoid their normal activities. Hence, learning to cope with an overactive bladder is essential to aging well.

Here, we share strategies to cope with urinary incontinence:

  • Perform Kegel exercises.

    Seniors can practice Kegel or pelvic floor exercises at home to strengthen the muscles that clench when they need to use the restroom. The pelvic floor muscles keep the organs in place to assist with bodily functions. Kegel exercises can also help with urge and fecal incontinence.

  • Be mindful of liquid intake.

    Beverages that contain caffeine and alcohol are diuretics that increase urine production. Seniors can cut down on diuretics like tea, coffee, soda, and alcohol but drink enough water to stay hydrated. They should also avoid drinking after dinner time to prevent having to go to the bathroom at night which can disrupt their sleep.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

    Being overweight increases fatty tissue which puts extra pressure on the bladder. This weakens the pelvic floor muscles and contributes to incontinence. A senior’s healthcare provider can recommend the best exercise and diet plan to help them maintain a healthy weight.

  • Use incontinence products.

    Urinary incontinence products like disposable underwear and adult diapers provide an absorbent layer. These products are available at pharmacies and can assist with odor control to keep seniors dry and comfortable.
