Both isolation and loneliness have been linked to several serious health risks, including heart attacks, strokes, depression, anxiety, and premature death.
Social isolation is fast becoming an epidemic, especially in senior populations. However, it is reversible through a couple of things individuals and/ or communities can do to help seniors feel included.
According to an AARP-sponsored study on the impact of loneliness on seniors, it was found that more than one-third of those involved in the survey between the ages of 50 and 80 felt a lack of companionship at least some of the time. 30% of the participants reported that they socialize with friends and family once a week or less.
Home care given by a trusted and dedicated provider like Lowenhill Home Care Services can address more than just the care needs of the patient/client, it can also provide seniors with the companionship and love that they need to cope with their varying conditions and to improve their overall health.
Let’s take collective action in ending social isolation in the senior community!
Take some time off your usual itinerary to do volunteer work at a senior center, or taking an elderly loved on out to their favorite restaurant for dinner, or simply striking up a conversation with a senior you see sitting alone. There is no limit to what we can do.
