Diabetes is a complex and chronic condition in which the body has trouble controlling the level of glucose in the blood. The National Diabetes Statistics Report estimates that around 37.3 million people in the United States have Diabetes presently.
Despite its high occurrence, there is still a lack of awareness of the disease. Not only that, but several misconceptions only end up confusing people. This is one of the many gaps we strive to bridge here at Lowenhill Home Care Services.
Hoping to raise the community’s awareness of Diabetes, allow us to share common myths surrounding it, and reveal the facts behind them. These are the following:
-
Myth: No one in my family has Diabetes, so I won’t get the disease.
Both type 1 and type 2 Diabetes are, indeed, influenced by family history. However, a lot of diabetics do not have any close relatives who also have the condition. Additionally, certain diseases and lifestyle decisions could make you more likely to develop type 2 Diabetes.
-
Myth: I have Diabetes, so I can never eat sweets.
Sweets are not forbidden for diabetics if they are planned for. They can consume small quantities of sugar in place of other carbohydrates normally consumed at a meal.
-
Myth: I can stop taking Diabetes medicines once my blood sugar is under control.
Diabetes is a chronic condition, so even if you take all the necessary precautions to be healthy, you may still require medication to keep your blood sugar levels within the recommended range.
